Frequently Asked Questions

Who can adopt?
MAPS places children with families who can best meet the child's needs. Both singles and couples, with and without children, have adopted through MAPS. Usually, potential parents are over 21 and no more than 45 years older than the child whom they adopt. If you are part of a couple, only one parent has to be within the 45-year age difference. We want to find loving families for as many children in need as we can, so there is always some room for flexibility.

Who are the children who wait?
MAPS places infants, toddlers, older children, sibling groups, and children with special needs from many backgrounds and countries: China, India, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Peru, Russia and the United States.

Do I need to know what program or country I want to adopt through before contacting MAPS?
No! Part of our job is to help you explore your options and answer your questions, so you can make an informed decision that feels right to you.

How much does adoption cost?
Fees range from nothing at all to as much as $40,000 or so, depending on whether you adopt from within the United States or from abroad and, often, on the age and availability of the child you are seeking to adopt. For an updated list of fees, contact us.

What if I can't afford to adopt?
You might want to consider adopting a child from the U.S. foster care system. You can also look into existing grants and loans by calling the National Adoption Foundation Grants and Loans Program at (203) 791-3811, learn more about the $10,160 federal tax credit and check with your employer to see if any adoption benefits are offered.
